Last week was an amazing week for the School of Riding. On Thursday morning we had the pleasure on educating thousands in only a few short minutes on CBC Radio. During the 10 minute program, Dan Pape was interviewed about the movement underway to teach the youth of the Sport the Basics of Longboarding before anything else. Young riders that are quickly joining the sport of longboarding, like any other sport, often look up to the riders that are seen in skate videos. The School of Riding's main focus is to mentor these new athletes in learning basic breaking techniques, traffic and sign awareness and the importance of bright clothes and full safety gear while commuting around town.
The importance of educating these young athletes that want to learn how to ride and how to commute from Point A to Point B is of absolute importance. Longboarding has been growing at such a rapid rate that we need to look out for each other by providing a program that teaches kids these elements. Riders are leaving Longboards Shops with great set-ups but no protective gear. Sometimes riders are using whatever helmet they already had because they feel that it's "good enough". You can never have too much head protection and pads for longboarding and it's actually more fun when you know you can fall a little. The School of Riding Safety Program is an education center to mentor the youth towards responsible riding and where not to ride for their own safety. Once the students at SOR have graduated from this mentor-ship program, they will be rewarded with amazing fun sessions that will last with them forever.
