Scoot Smith WINS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP! MARYHILL FESTIVAL OF SPEED / IGSA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Scoot Smith WINS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP! MARYHILL FESTIVAL OF SPEED / IGSA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. The entire downhill skateboarding world descended on Goldendale, Wash., August27-31, 2008 for the Maryhill Festival of Speed. After the enormous success of the 2007 Maryhill Festival of Speed, the decision was made to grant the event World Championship status. It was the 7th IGSA World Championship event and, most significantly, marked the first time they were held in North America.

The world-famous “Maryhill Loops Road” is a 2.5-mile technical descent on one of the world’s greatest downhill courses. In addition to the racing, the riders enjoyed daily activities including autograph sessions, dinner parties, live bands and an athlete campground. NBC Sports was also on hand to capture the action for a nationwide broadcast a few weeks later.

SKATE INDUSTRY INNOVATORS: Resource Distriubtion Joey Pulsifer Taking It Back To The Streets!

Skate Industry Innovators Joey Pulsifer taking it back to the streets

Resource DistResource Distribution is putting a huge amount of focus on skateboard hard goods. We had a chance to speak with one of its founders, Joey Pulsifer, who explained his goals in detail.“What we’re trying to create with Resource is a one-stop shop for skate hard goods – one-stop meaning longboards and short boards. The companies we carry are all truly unique: Riviera, Given, Roger, Project, Paris and Venom – they all offer something different.” Joey feels that Riviera is a standout longboard brand because it’s not just focused on the surfing lifestyle. “Riviera is focused on all types of people: surfers, skaters, snowboarders, bros, brahs, whoever,” he explains.

Recent additions to Resource include Roger Skateboards, a company put together by pro skater Stacy Lowery and artist Michael Sieben, and Given Skateboards, Kris Markovich’s new board company. This is the first time Kris has 100% ownership in a skateboard brand. Resource also offers Project hardware and the popular Paris trucks. Joey notes that Venom bushings will also be  hitting shortly, and he hopes they will meet with the same kind of success that other products have.

I was intrigued to find out what it was about Resource that made it unique. After all, there are numerous distributors out there. “We started Resource Distribution with the idea that shops would be able to buy multiple product lines with one call. That’s the basic idea. Little did we know that people would actually embrace it and use it so quickly!” Joey says. He points out that a lot of shops carry street boards and longboards already.

SKATE INDUSTRY INNOVATORS: Adam Herron Grinds Toward The Future!
Written by CalStreets Early Exclusive

Skateboard Industry Innovators Adam Herron of Herron Trucks another Amazing Story!

HERRON TRUCKS — GRINDING TOWARD THE FUTURE Adam Herron grew up in the Midwest in the Kansas City area and started skating back in 1990 when he was around 11. “My parents owned a machine shop, so that’s where I . “Through my dad’s shop we were machining hole patterns on carbon fiber wheels for another company that made ATV and Outlaw race car wheels. So I knew the strength and weight ratios of carbon fiber compared to aluminum,” explains Adam.

Since he and his brother both skated, they knew you have only one option when it comes to trucks: aluminum. “But we knew that it wasn’t just any aluminum; it was cheap, poorly cast aluminum,” Adam said. He added that he always felt like the pride has disappeared in the truck manufacturers’ work, and he was determined to build something better.

I asked Adam about what it was about carbon fiber that intrigued him. “The biggest misconception about carbon fiber is that it is sticky or gummy when it comes to grinding. That couldn’t be any further from the truth…It’s the exact opposite. Where I live, a popular weekend getaway is to go canoeing, and if you’ve ever been, you know that when you are in an aluminum canoe and you hit shallow water, you have to get out and drag the boat with all your might to get across the rocks. When you are in a fiberglass canoe you don’t even have to get out of the boat; you just glide smoothly right on top like the rocks are waxed.”

Hippie Mike Gets Awarded by The Surrey Food Bank
Written by Staff Kudos
Thursday, 27 November 2008
Every year, The Surrey Food Bank has their Christmas Kickoff Event which includes their Donor Recognition Awards Ceremony. It is always a great time. There is live music, snacks and treats, Face Painting, and of course, the Big Guy in the Red Suit shows up every year to hang out with the kids. It's a day of friendship, caring people and smiling faces.

This year's celebration was really awesome. There was probably 150 people there enjoying their time together. The band playing was "Keith Diamond & The Rockets and they were amazing. Their slogan on their business card reads, "We Only Play For FREE". Awesome! These guys had some real musical talent and they were banging out all the best old time Rock n' Roll tunes from the 50's and 60's, some of my favorite music. You could tell that they just love to play, and they only play at Fundraiser events.

Hippie Mike's Receives His Award

The band took a break at about 11:30 and it was time for Marilyn to take over the stage, say some heart warming words, and hand out some beautiful Plaques. There were many people recognized, probably about 15 different people or organizations. These people are the ones who really dedicate time out of their lives to help support the Surrey Food Bank. This year was a tough one for the Surrey Food Bank, with the economy on the rapid rise, the stock market crashing down, and them even getting broken into in the late Spring. Donations were not at their highest this year. But "Hippie" Mike Faux, along with many others all came together and helped out large in 2008. This was the most successful year for Mike's series' of Skateboard Competitions - Hippie Mike's Tour de Surrey.

Next Generation of Collectors Emerges from the 1960s-1980s skateboarding movement.
Written by Toy Collector Magazine: Karla Klein Albertson
Tuesday, 18 November 2008

People who collect old skateboards do so for the same reasons people collect comic books or old toys — they still feel a connection to it, said Miki Vuckovich, noted skateboarding photographer and executive director of the Tony Hawk Foundation. “It’s a natural nostalgia for what you had a kid, so it’s the same reason somebody wants to collect all the old G.I. Joes.”

Old school powellHe continued, “They skated a certain type of board back in the day, and it was the perfect board. Everything today looks so different. They went to a skateshop and all of the boards are made for a 5 foot 3 inch, 14-year-old kid! They don’t see today what they experienced as a young skater, so they want a piece of that past. They want to reconnect in some way.”

“One thing about skateboard collectors,” he cautioned, “even though they understand what a rare board is and what a collectible board is and the importance of condition, their holy grail is that board they owned themselves as a kid, whether that’s a production board that’s easy to find or a one of a kind.” When asked, Vuckovich readily admitted to reacquiring his old board.

Toys or skateboards or comics, collectors are now affirming that their passion is not a second childhood but a reconnection with an important part of their personality. Miki Vuckovich agrees. “When I was younger, adults generally looked at skateboarding as this renegade thing that you did when you were a kid, then you got over it and moved on. From my perspective, it was just something I really loved to do. It defined my whole life. Now people from my generation are parents ourselves.”

He shared a comment made by legendary Z-Boy team member and skateboarding film director Stacy Peralta: “It’s an interesting thing. My generation is into our mid- to late forties. We were the first pro skateboarders to make it big in the 1970s. We’re really the oldest generation of the pro skateboarders - and a lot of us are still skating. So it’s really hard to say how old you could be and still skate.”
